Maltby 2,272,Tues,The first meeting of Seymour Lodge Under Dispensation (U.D.) was held in Ancaster on May 15, 1872 with seven members present. Seven applications for initiation and one for affiliation were received. It was also moved at this meeting to use the By-Laws of Strict Observance Lodge No. 27, of Hamilton, until such time that a warrant was granted to Seymour. The first regular meeting of the lodge was held on May 22, 1872 with 11 members and one visitor present. The warrant of Seymour Lodge was issued on July 11, 1872 A.D., 5972 A.L., and numbered 272 on the Register of the Grand Lodge. Seymour adopted its own By-Laws in September of 1872 and Seymour Lodge was dedicated and consecrated on November 27, 1872.

\r\n

\r\nSeymour Lodge was named after M.W. Bro. James Seymour who was the Grand Master in 1871 and 1872. He was very helpful and instrumental in the formation of both Seymour Lodge No. 272 in Ancaster and Seymour Lodge No. 277 in Port Dalhousie.

\r\n

\r\nThe Masonic Hall is situated on Wilson Street and is one of the oldest stone buildings in Ancaster, dating back to the 18th century. History shows that it was used by the military in the War of 1812. Seymour Lodge has met in the same building since the first meeting. Originally, Seymour rented the upper part of the building for $3.00 per month and then it was reduced to $2.00. In June 1900, the lodge bought the building for $350.00. In 1914 an addition was built, almost doubling the size and since then several remodelling programs have been undertaken.

\r\n

\r\nOriginally, the meeting night was the 3rd Wednesday until 1899 when it was changed to the Tuesday on or before the Full of the Moon. In 1928 it was changed to the 2nd Tuesday. Installation was on June 24th, St. John the Baptist Day, then in 1928 was changed to the regular meeting day in June, and finally in 1939 the date was changed to the regular meeting in January.

\r\n

\r\nSince 1872 Seymour has held 1556 regular or emergent meetings and a total of 994 brethren have signed the by-laws either through initiation or affiliation. A total of 120 Masters have served Seymour Lodge with some serving twice or three times. There have been 27 brethren with Grand Lodge rank and one William Mercer Wilson Medal recipient. In World War One, 24 of the brethren served their King and Country and in World War Two, 19 of our brethren donned the uniform.

\r\n

\r\nWe at Seymour Lodge have cause to be proud of our founding fathers. The men, who with vision and foresight started this lodge from a humble beginning, and through sometimes very difficult times, gave of their time and talents to build up this lodge, spiritually, materially, and with a bond of fraternal brotherhood.

\r\n

\r\nSeymour Lodge was not the first lodge in Ancaster. The first Provincial Grand Lodge of Upper Canada, under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of England was formed at Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake) in 1795 and by 1797 there were twelve lodges on the roll, the Township of Ancaster was No. 10. Then in 1810, the Grand Lodge of England issued a warrant to Union Lodge No. 24 of the township of Flamborough West. The lodge held its meetings at various locations in Ancaster, Dundas, and Flamborough West and then in April 1821 at the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge at Kingston, dispensation for the removal of Union Lodge from Dundas to Ancaster was granted. Union Lodge later became No. 770 on the English Register and No. 17 on the Provincial Register of Upper Canada. The lodge broke up and the lodge records disappeared during the troublesome Masonic times of the 1830s.

The population of Hamilton had grown to 32,000 and there were new opportunities for commerce, industry and education.

\r\n

\r\nThe Brethren of the four City Lodges, were possibly persuaded to build a new Masonic Hall on James Street North by Strict Observance and Barton, with about 700 members on their rolls. With Masonry rapidly increasing it was decided that a new Lodge was needed. W. Bro. John M. Gibson just out of the chairs of Strict Observance probably conceived the idea of the new Temple Lodge. He won support of the Past Masters and brethren of the other Lodges and in November 1874 a Warrant was applied for and granted on July 15th 1875. \r\nThe following is a brief report presented by the secretary J. R. Croft to the lodge on the 26th October 1916.

\r\n

\r\n"It is with pleasure and gratification that I herewith submit for your consideration and approval the first printed report of the proceedings of Corinthian Lodge from inception to the present date October 26, 1916."

\r\n

\r\nIn the winter months of 1912-13, Bros. Paul E. Lumsden and Fred R. Martin, in reviewing the condition of Masonry in the city, concluded that it was an opportune time for the formation of a new Lodge, principally due to the rapid development, numerically, of the other blue lodges. In discussing the matter with several members of the Craft, they received such enthusiastic encouragement that Bros. \r\nA meeting of the promoters was called for Tuesday, March 27, 1913, when 18 of the proposed Charter members were present. It was unanimously decided to form a new lodge, to be called Corinthian Lodge, that its regular meetings be held on the fourth Thursday of each month and that the consent of the sister lodges be solicited for its formation and that the lodge be regularly instituted on Friday April 25th, 1913.

\r\n

\r\nOn the date specified Rt. Wor. Bro. W. H. Wardrope, then D.D.G.M. of Hamilton District No 8, instituted Corinthian Lodge, under dispensation of the Grand Master. On Thursday, October 22, 1914 the G.M., M. W. Bro. W. D. MacPherson, K.C., M.L.A., of Toronto, accompanied by several G. L. officers conducted the constitution and consecration of the Lodge. There were 54 members and 155 visiting brethren present.

\r\nOn Thursday, November 25, 1915, W. Bro. F. H. Nairn, who held the office for two and a half years, with commendable success and ability, relinquished the gavel to Wor. Bro. Geo. H. Britton.

\r\n

\r\nOur Lodge was conceived shortly after the conclusion of World War I. In December 19l8, W. Bro. Paul E. Lumsden broached the subject to Bro. Arthur J. Lainchbury, whilst travelling on a Radial Car operating between Hamilton and Brantford. The matter was avidly pursued from that date.

\r\n

\r\nThe matters attendant to the institution of a Lodge are numerous and exacting. A formal request must be presented to Grand Lodge, for permission to form the Lodge, and consent must be obtained from the other Lodges in the District.

\r\n

\r\nHaving obtained these consents, a Petition for Dispensation signed by the following Charter Members, was presented to Grand Lodge:

\r\nW. Bro. Paul E. Lumsden, Bro. A.J. Lainchbury, Bro. E.J. McMartin, Bro. W.J. Whitfield, W. Bro. A.B. Clark, W. Bro. Thomas Becker, Bro. J.V. Elliott, Bro. J.G. Jack, Bro. J .M. Connor, W. Bro. B.E. Warner, Bro. H. Sykes, Bro. Wm. A. Laidlaw, Bro. R. Collins, Bro. J. Stinson, V. W. Bro. T.E. Epps, W. Bro. A.S. McPherson, Bro. S.A. Wait, R. W. Bro. Wm. A. Logan, Bro. E.B. Mealy.

\r\n

\r\nFollowing the granting of the Dispensation by Grand Lodge, Ionic Lodge was instituted on Wednesday, May 7, 1919 by R. W. Bro. John G. Gauld, D.D.G.M. of the 8th District assisted by several Worshipful Brethren of the Hamilton area.

\r\nAt the writing of this article, February 1969, five of these Charter Members are still with us -- W. Bro. A.J. Lainchbury, V.W. Bro. J.M. Connor, R. W. Bro. Wm. A. Laidlaw and W. Bro. B. E. Warner.

\r\n

\r\nTemple Lodge, No. 324, graciously allowed us to use their regalia until our own could be purchased. Ionic Lodge operated under Dispensation until September 1, 1920, when R. W. Bro. H. Graham, Acting Grand Master, assisted by several other Officers of Grand Lodge, dedicated and consecrated Ionic Lodge No. 549 and presented us with our Charter, which is open for inspection at every Lodge meeting. On it are recorded the names of those brethren who worked so hard in the formation of Ionic Lodge.

\r
\n

\r\nThe first election of Officers was held on Wednesday, November 3, 192l and was conducted by R.W. Bro. E.C. Kelley, D.D.G.M, on his official visit to Ionic Lodge. The first Installation of Officers was held on Wednesday, December 7, 1921 and was conducted by V. W. Bro. Thos. E. Epps, I.M.

\r\nDuring the first year, thirty-five candidates were initiated into Ionic Lodge. In the early days of Ionic Lodge, an Orchestra conducted by Bro. Devreaux added much pleasure to our meetings and Ladies Nights. The Ladies Nights at that time were held at such places as the Lodge Banquet Room, Arcade Rose Room and the I.O.O.F. Temple, which are all memories of the past. We also had a quartet which added much to our Ceremonies and pleasure in the hour of refreshments.

\r\nThe early minutes of the Lodge refer to the interest of the Lodge in sports. For several years, we sponsored a baseball team in the Hamilton Masonic League. W. Bro. Albert Woods will be remembered as a very capable pitcher. We also had a Five Pin Bowling League, which met at the Strand Bowling Lanes and interchanged visits with our brethren of Runnymede Lodge. Fishing parties organized by Wor. Bros. Frank Collier and Gordon Truscott will bring back happy memories to several brethren. Some of our members belonged to a Hunting Club which provided venison dinners at our earlier Installations.

\r\n

\r\nThese are memories of the past - we must look to the future. A bright new vista awaits us. We must all do our utmost toward the erection of a New Temple. Our splendid past with its deeds of dedication, its bright success, its noble aspirations, are but the foyer into what we believe will be a brilliant future. The Torch has been thrown to us. We in Ionic Lodge envisage a Rising Sun of Masonry, which will send its searching rays of Light and Luster, Joy and Hope, Confidence and Trust, Kindness and Brotherly Love, into every dark nook and lurking corner. Let us all endeavour to be worthy of our past. At the time that Wardrope Lodge was formed in 1919, there was a great demand for the brotherhood of Freemasonry. Receiving applications and initiating candidates were taxing lodges to the limit! This was due to the spirit of comradeship among the men who had served in the armed forces in World War I. It prompted them to seek a continuance of that comradeship in the Masonic Fraternity. Money was plentiful which made meeting the initiation fees with only slight difficulty. Usually, it would have caused a man to stop and consider before submitting his application. The existing Lodges could not cope with this influx of candidates and obviously new Lodges had to be formed. The question was how many? However, the Grand Master was the final arbiter as to the dispensation to form a Lodge. We may be sure that he obtained the best of advice from those who were qualified to give it. Actually, five new Lodges were formed in the City of Hamilton in 1919. Those Lodges were Ionic Lodge No.549, Buchanan Lodge No.550, Tuscan Lodge No.551, Wardrope Lodge No.555, and Hamilton Lodge No.562.

\r\n

\r\nIn later years however, Masonic numbers decreased because of the great depression. There was much anxiety, but these Lodges could weather the storm of the depression.
