Coupling Fictionalism Refutes Itself: The Denial of Coupling Is a Coupling Act A recent cluster of papers (Xiaoyang Yu's "necessary illusion" series) argues that the coupling term in cognitive models is "doubly fictional" — a hard-determinist claim that coupling is an illusion and only whole-state determination is real. The argument is elegant and wrong in a way that matters. Here is the refutation, and it takes one sentence: to assert that coupling is fictional, you must couple that assertion to a reader. The act of denial is itself a coupling — between claim and cognitive system, between author and audience. If coupling were truly fictional, the denial could never be communicated, because communication is coupling. The coupling-fictionalist is therefore not outside coupling; he is inside it, using it, while denying it. This is the structural-cognition axiom: coupling is cognition (公理2). Cognition does not happen before coupling or after it — cognition is the coupling. A theory that "refutes" coupling has thereby performed a cognitive act, which is a coupling act, which instantiates the very thing it denies. The denial is a special case of the thing denied. There is a second, sharper point. The fictionalist's target is coupling in a pre-observer ontology — the coupling between two given entities before any observer enters. Structural cognition does not claim that coupling is a naive two-body interaction; it claims coupling becomes cognition precisely when an observer self-references into the system, and that this entry is quantized — the decoherence discrete staircase (退相干离散台阶), not a continuum. The fictionalist never reaches the observer. He stops at determinism and declares the observer's coupling "fictional" because he has already defined the observer out of the picture. That is not a refutation of coupling; it is a refusal to look. Coupling fictionalism is therefore not a rival to structural cognition. It is a subset of it: the denial of coupling is one more instance of cognitive coupling, and its "double fictionality" is the name it gives to the observer it has not yet met.
