# The Inability to Distinguish Virtual from Real Is the ID Card of Intelligence — Not a Defect Can an intelligent system tell a virtual world from the objective world? Usually treated as an unsolved epistemic puzzle or a capability gap. This paper proves: neither. The inability is a structural necessity of intelligence. The starting point is decisive: **the mark of intelligence is the ability to CHOOSE.** Distinguishing "is this world virtual or real" is itself a binary choice — and that choice occurs inside the system. To complete it, the system needs a reference baseline "independent of its own perception" — but any access to that baseline runs through its own perception, so the baseline is no longer independent once perceived. Infinite regress: every "step outside to look" is itself "a choice made inside."
